Sandy was actually the second recent disaster to hit New Jersey. Residents were still reeling from the 2008 recession. Many of the regions residents are facing a safety net that is under attack. New Jersey’s pension system is battered. It has been underfunded since 1996 when Governors began to defer legally required payments in a stated effort to plug holes in the budget. Add to that last year for only the third time since the mid-seventies, there will be no cost of living increase for people on Social Security and that there are ongoing federal debates that threaten to cut Social Security and Social Security Disability Insurance.
And in today’s rapidly shifting political environment, the healthcare of thousands of New Jerseyans is at stake. We’re working to protect our health, retirement and safety net.
